At 219 metres long and 60 metres wide, this is one of the largest open public spaces in Austria. It’s quite old – first built in 1230, and used to be a major market. You’ll notice a curious fact about the buildings: they have narrow facades and long bodies. This is because the area around the square was prime real estate and everyone wanted a piece of it.
Several historically important events have happened here: the marriage of Archduke Ferdinand with Anna of Hungary; the Losenstein Tournament; and many major executions. But the most importantly this was where Adolf Hitler gave his famous speech on the Greater German Reich. Briefly, it was even named after him – the Adolf Hitler Platz!
The highlights today are:
- The old Town Hall and the City Museum.
- The Feichtinger- house (listen for the chimes)
- Kirchmayr house- check out the Baroque facade.
There are many cafes around the square that serve up excellent ice cream. And the people watching is great too. This is also where they hold the Christmas market.
How To reach Hauptplatz by Public Transport
- Tram 1, 2, 3, stop Hauptplatz
