Built in the 1940s to celebrate the supply of clean water to eastern Lisbon, this giant fountain is a striking, classical sight. Though you can always enjoy the majestic sight from outside, on Saturday afternoons, you can check out the workings of the fountain from the inside too- the pumps, original switchboard, transformers, tuning tools and drainage. The guided tours will also speak of the architecture of the fountain, who built it and how.
Right in front of the fountain is the pretty three hectare green lawn-garden known as the Alameda Dom Afonso Henriques.
