The National Cemetery is the final resting place of soldiers who died fighting wars in Arkansas. At first, only the Union soldiers fighting in the Civil War were interred in the cemetery. The Confederate soldiers were buried in the Confederate Cemetery adjacent to the National Cemetery. The two cemeteries were combined into one in 1938. Till date, you can see the divide between the soldiers of the Confederate and the Union Army. Inside the cemetery are two monuments - the Confederate Monument and the Minnesota Monument. Since it is closed to new interments, the cemetery has now become a national monument.
