I have been coming here since 2001 and I have now decided this place is not what it was. The quality of the food has declined. When entering the place was once alive with numerous chefs frantically preparing dishes. Now you can see food laying on hot plates waiting to be served. This impacts on the quality of mains and fries when they arrive at the table . Little touches that made the place so quirky and fun are gone. Very few staff now wear the monks habit, diners no longer descend to the restaurant in the large industrial lift, the Belgian beer advertising graphics have been replaced by flat screen TVs. Service has declined. A staff member got my beer order wrong three times yesterday and forgot one of the side orders. I have recently returned beer for being flat and had this quibbled on by staff. The place has also acquired an "eat up and leave" type of feel. No longer a place to linger. I won't be back for a while.
It's a good Belgian option in Central London. Their Belgian beer selection is probably the largest in London and every beer comes in matching glass. The mussels were good too, although you could get better ones in small restaurants near the coast. But in the city this is quite good.
Food was okay. Chicken was overcooked and dry. Mussels were good. Service was poor, couldn't flag down a waiter, even though it wasn't busy. Waiter unfortunately spilled beer over friend, but he apologised and tried to clean it up. Sadly another waiter spilled red tomato sauce all over my coat (permanently stained it now) and didn't say a thing. Quite expensive for what it was.
Started with hot and bbq wings. Sauce was watery and lacked in real flavor. Got mussels, chicken and the burger for main. Mussels were slightly above average but broth was lacking flavor. Chicken was bland even with the sauces. Burger was good. Might come back again to give them a second chance.
The food in this place is good, don't get me wrong. But the service is rather bad. We were trying to make some sense out of the huge selection of beers that they offer, but our waiter was almost unable to give us any tips of what beer could go better with what food. He was also a bit unpleasant and got our vegetarian order wrong and brought us a dish with meat in it... Still worth if you want to work your way across the huge selection of Belgium beers, but don't expect them to guide you...
