This is not a cheap place to eat, but the food isn't worth it and the service (which over the past 3 years has always been poor) is now terrible. You will have to wait a long time to be served by staff who are not very friendly. It will also take a ridiculous amount f time for the person taking your money to enter your order into the useless touchscreen software. If you order lasagne, be warned that it will be microwaved and more than likely be cold in middle. Other food not up to scratch, cakes are dry. On the plus side, the coffee is good.
Pitfield was a place that I wanted in my heart to be everything that I dreamed of from a cornershop cafe hidden on the off piste streets of Shoreditch. A shop where when I entered on a morning, would have staff that would greet me with a smile that would make me forget about the metropolitan juggernaut of a city London is and would simply put me at ease as I sat down for my breakfast. Alas it was not what my heart desired. Entering the cafe, its first impressions are good, however the more I observed and looked around the less enjoyable the surroundings got. The tables are tightly fit together with no real sense, a long table that likely seats 8 is surrounded by others of different sizes that may confuse singles that may just want to sit for a cup of coffee, some croissants and work on their hip startup that will be the next big thing. Anyways, on we go. At the counter I'm greeted by an attractive lady which by her accent I presume to be French who asks for my order, I order poached eggs and move on to a table. A few minutes run by and my poached eggs arrive. Now the food at Pitfield presents me with a dichotomy that somewhat perplexes me the way very few places have. The food isn't quite good but it isn't quite bad as well. I would say that average doesn't quite seem right as well. My best description would be uninspiringly acceptable. Firstly, something that really aggravated me was the fact that the food arrived on the plate scattered as though I had to assemble it myself. I thought this was a trendy cafe in Shoreditch? What photo am I gonna take and post on instagram with #brunch when its not aesthetically pleasing. Sarcasm by the way. Though the final part is not. Paying £8.50 for poached eggs that don't even come beautifully presented is sloppy and unacceptable. This isn't scrambled eggs where some may not want the eggs on the bread for fear it be soggy (which is an argument for another day). This is poached eggs that should be placed on top of a bed of spinach with a lovely crusty toasted bread. Their lack of attention and care seems to continue on the food, the poached eggs was surrounded by a small pool of water that I presume to be poaching liquid. Regardless of whether they used a slotted spoon to take the eggs out, a keen eye should always be placed upon food before it is dispatched to customers. Again, sloppy. Overall the meal was poor, one of the 2 eggs was overcooked and seemed to be torn between wanting to ooze out or stay solid which irked me considering poached eggs are somewhat of an easy thing to do. Regardless of what the public may perceive, poached eggs really aren't that difficult to do and any home cook can do it, which leads me to my final conclusion. Pitfield's food comes across to me as what an inspired unexperienced home chef would cook. Restaurant type foods, though executed poorly. Though having said that, enough practise and that inspired home cook will eventually nail it, I don't know if the same can be said here. My bet is Pitfield will continue to run long after this review, this is thanks to the culture of Shoreditch and the hip young adults who continue to go to these type of cafe's to fuel the image of the lifestyle they like to live, though I insist that if you walk further into Shoreditch and turn a few corners you may just find that cafe you dreamed of. Maybe I'm too much of a romantic who's dreaming to be in the Brunswick of Melbourne instead of London with an expertly made cup of coffee by an Australian with charm and a good sense of humour, flanked by a pastry chef that used to work in Paris. Although an attractive French lady would certainly do no harm to my dream, a poorly executed breakfast certainly does. Fin
Great coffee, friendly staff and lovely atmosphere
Has a nice curbside appeal and looks inviting... but we didn’t have a good experience with the quality of our drinks/food and the service we received. Our smoothie and orange juice was served warm with mysterious large black chunks....Breakfast served without utensils and salt and pepper. Overall the staff is not attentive and barely acknowledges their customers.
Food took ages, tasted bland, staff was rude and forgot the basics (I.e cutlery and being polite). Rare to get everything wrong...
