Very old traditional pub. Loads of stories and curiosities to be seen in each little room including a hand said to be the chopped hand of a cheating card player... Lovely and cozy. Just a bit disappointed as we told the barman we wanted to have dinner but wanted to get a drink first. So we were told to enjoy our pints in the pub area and to give you a shout whe' ready to eat. When we did so after a cigarette outside, we were told the restaurant was booked out...
Pub and restaurant a few hundred years old. Try the Haunch of Venison dish - excellent. Worthy of naming the restaurant after it. Toffee and ice cream dessert is excellent time too. Quaint.
Excellent traditional pub with a history and wonderful decor. Authentic English pub dishes - which, mind you, might put some health-conscious folks off. Impressive.
Sorry to give such a low score to the restaurant because I take my visitors to the bar downstairs often and that is terrific. But the restaurant... bowl of mussels - almost all entirely closed! That's a lot of dead mussels going to make you sick. How can a chef ignore that? My caesar salad had musty stale old bread, not croutons; the dressing sticking everything together into a congealed mass. The restaurant had just 2 tables being used which equals 6 covers so the kitchen was hardly stretched. Go somewhere else after looking at the restaurant, as so many do, it is beautiful but sadly being sold short by the kitchen. Tourists take pictures of you eating and go elsewhere. Like Wetherspoons in Fisherton St.
Venison stew and mussels were great. So was appetizer of carillada (pork cheeks with white beans and chorizo). Very happy with our meal.
