About Basecamp Spitsbergen, Longyearbyen

Ages ago, brave trappers lived in Svalbard leading a rough life based on hunting and survival. The Trapper’s Station has tried to replicate these very hunting communities. It has attempted to create an ambience which, when the Arctic winds blow, will bring out the trapper within.

At this little hotel, you get to experience the life of a trapper, from how it was to live off hunting to what a trapper ate and how he slept. Trapper’s station is located 10Kms from Longyearbyen in Bolterdalen. The buildings are made to look like the hunting communities and books, images, artefacts and hunting equipments deck the place. Huge, gorgeous and absolutely adorable Alaskan huskies greet you at the door of the station. The station is home to 80 such huskies which have been trained for mushing.

The station offers truly distinctive arctic trapper’s dinner. This place can be best enjoyed if travelling with a group. A wooden tepee type hut can be rented where in you can sleep on cozy reindeer skin around a warm, open fire. Wilderness has its own allure. While it is difficult to actually survive wilderness, the Trapper’s station comes pretty close to giving a realistic experience.

Basecamp Spitsbergen, Longyearbyen Reviews

  • They organized our entire schedule and it was fantastic, the guides were great and the hotel is cozy! Definitely a svalbard experience!

  • Takes you into a world of trappers and explorers, every little or big detail is thoughtful. The bed rooms are cosy, and everything you need is there. I keep discovering new interesting features all the time. The bar by the reception serves nice drinks and snacks. This is a great place to hang at.

  • Very rustic hotel, but it was a nice experience, with nice attention. Not like standard hotels for turists. I would repeat. Restaurant Kroa aside is very nice.

  • My favorite lodge. You can feel the artic. Very cozy. There is a common room in the upper floor where youu can enjoy the sky since the roof is made from clear glass.

  • If you're looking for somewhere to stay on Svalbard as unique as the islands themselves then look no further - this is an awesome place to stay. Plenty of creature comforts and a good breakfast included. Highly recommended!
