With a history dating back to 1921, the Svalbard Church is the northernmost church in the world and is a lovely little place not only for a memorable prayer. Svalbard Kirke is the only church in Svalbard, but there is a Russian Orthodox Chapel in Barentsburg.

In July 1921 the construction of the church started and it was completed within 50 days, consecrated on 24 August 1921. However, when the Second World War came to Svalbard, the church was destroyed in 1943. The building of a new church started in 1957 which was consecrated on August 24, 1958.

The warm and cosy church is homely and serves all people indiscriminately. The church has a common area where one can enjoy tea or coffee at NOK 20 as they revel in peace. You can also play Christmas songs on the piano at the holy place! The new Svalbard Church holds objects of historical importance such as:

• The old altar candlesticks of silver, which were a gift from King Haakon and Queen Maud.
• A baptismal bowl.

Svalbard Church is built on the model of a sailor church. 

• The entrance near the altar maybe locked. Try the other entrance from the side building.
