Crustaceans (Crustacea ) form a large, diverse arthropod taxon which includes such familiar animals as crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimp, krill, woodlice and barnacles. The crustacean group is usually treated as a subphylum, and thanks to recent molecular studies it is now well accepted that the crustacean group is paraphyletic, and comprises all animals in the Pancrustacea clade other than hexapods. In other words, some crustaceans are more closely related to insects and other hexapods than they are to certain other crustaceans. The 67,000 described species range in size from Stygotantulus stocki at 0.1 mm (0.004 in), to the Japanese spider crab with a leg span of up to 3.8 m (12.5 ft) and a mass of 20 kg (44 lb). Like other arthropods, crustaceans have an exoskeleton, which they moult to grow. They are distinguished from other groups of arthropods, such as insects, myriapods and chelicerates, by the possession of biramous (two-parted) limbs, and by their larval forms, such as the nauplius stage of branchiopods and copepods. Most crustaceans are free-living aquatic animals, but some are terrestrial (e.g. woodlice), some are parasitic (e.g. Rhizocephala, fish lice, tongue worms) and some are sessile (e.g. barnacles). The group has an extensive fossil record, reaching back to the Cambrian, and includes living fossils such as Triops cancriformis, which has existed apparently unchanged since the Triassic period. More than 10 million tons of crustaceans are produced by fishery or farming for human consumption, the majority of it being shrimp and prawns. Krill and copepods are not as widely fished, but may be the animals with the greatest biomass on the planet, and form a vital part of the food chain. The scientific study of crustaceans is known as carcinology (alternatively, malacostracology, crustaceology or crustalogy), and a scientist who works in carcinology is a carcinologist.

  • Though I do not agree with all the hype, it is a must- have dining experience for the LA- going foodie/restaurant aficionado. The owner is a beautiful spirit. Order the crab and the drinks are amazing.

  • Excellent! We were graciously greeted and the staff immediately accommodated our request to sit outside on a beautiful sunny afternoon. We arrived between lunch and dinner and had a wonderful selection from the small plate/happy hour menu. The wine paired perfectly with our meal and the service was impeccable. Recommend wholeheartedly.

  • Had a date night here with the wife. Reservations are a must. We were seated right away and our server was very friendly. Parking was a bit difficult but that's expected in this neighborhood. The food was excellent and the service was great. We saw Ann but didn't say hi as she was too far away. We had a wonderful dinner and great drinks. You could tell that a great deal of care went into preparing the meal. We met another couple who was seated next to us and it was their first time as well. You would think that it would be a pretentious place, but it wasn't. The food was great, atmosphere was beautiful and the decorations were very nice as well. The Koi were very nice too. We had a great time and will definitely be back

  • Our fifth experience with Crustacean on 3.20.17 and it continues to delight. It is a not-to-be-missed dining venue when in L.A. Jeffrey, our second dining experience with him, is par excellence, a knowledgeable, gracious wait staff who is the best example of the restaurant's warmth and culinary expertise. And per my husband, a lamb lover: "...best lamb in the land."

  • Had a really nice experience here. Ordered the crab cake salad. Also try the garlic noodles. Our server was very good.
