If you're eager to try the latest and greatest in entertainment experiences, and happen to be in Los Angeles (or New York), then IMAX VR is a sure bet. The LA Centre offers a truly immersive cinematic/arcade style experience in what can only be described as a futuristic-boutique- lounge-meets-radical-eighties-game-arena setting. Feel like fending off Storm Troopers on Tatooine? Or, how about teaming up with a friend to take out an army of killer robots? Tickets can be purchased online, but walk-ins are welcome as well (though, given required legal and safety authorizations it's a good idea to purchase tickets ahead of time). To summarize my own experience, this is clearly the future of arcade-style gaming.
IMAX VR Centre is filled with dynamic and thrilling VR experiences. A new realm of entertainment and fun. However, my only suggestion is that the place make itself more visible to the public eye, especially during the nighttime, such as by adding colorful and well-placed lighting on the building to draw attention and intrigue. I found out about this place after reading an online article. I would not have noticed it if I was driving by it.
I've tried many different VR devices, and VR 'arcades'. This one is pretty good; it's most notable because it features two games that use StarVR, which I haven't seen anywhere else. Unfortunately while StarVR is pretty cool because of its extra large field of view, the games (that I think IMAX developed specifically for this venue) aren't very good. The Mummy experience is very cool because it puts you in a helicopter in the game, and there is a real life setup in your 'pod' that makes it feel like you're really sitting on the edge of a helicopter thanks to the matching fabrics, textures and vibrations. The actual StarVR games however aren't actually fun to play, apart from VR bring cool in of itself. If these games existed in a PS4 for example, I can guarantee they would be universally planned as trash. Only other game I played was The Raw, which is a pretty decent shooter. However it still doesn't top Super Hot as my favourite VR shooter, and overall #1 VR game I've played. It does however, make use of a backpack you wear that adds vibration to your torso which was a nice touch. I think if IMAX VR wants to continue to attract new and returning guests, they will need to focus on unique experiences that one wouldn't be able to achieve buy buying a VR device for their home. The Mummy is a great example of this. I would be much more inclined to return of every game has real life 'furniture' to match the virtual content you are seeing. Overall, it's worth checking out at least once, especially if you haven't tried VR before. I'll be visiting at least one more time to try some multiplayer experiences. My other gripe is that it's a bit pricey, more expensive than a movie ticket for a shorter experience. They aren't exactly apples and oranges, but I think $15 for a 20 minute session is a bit steep. These prices.tell me it's marketed for very infrequent visits.
Flagship is top quality gear and staff, fun and flexible. This is the future of gaming, be in the game. Raw Data is the best!
Fun place with innovative new vr experiences, including headsets (StarVR) that you can't even buy. Headsets were clean and staff was courteous. Minus one star for the lame Mummy game.
