Imagine if it was easy to just gaze at the night skies and observe the atmosphere; through a telescope. If something like this interests you, head to the Powell Observatory in Louisburg. Built in 1984 by the Astronomical Society, Powell Observatory is one of the largest and includes several large telescopes which are available for public viewing. The telescope housed inside a dome has a 30-inch mirror, which helps you observe the skies clearly. A gem of a place, if Astronomical seeing is what you want to do, this place is just great; also allowing you to learn about astronomy. This Observatory is ideal for families, children and even school groups.
Powell Observatory Reviews & Ratings
Very nice people who all volunteer. Wasn't exactly what i expected but maybe my hopes were to high. Still nice place and very weather permitting. Call ahead and see what the subject is. Differs each week.
Staff very friendly. The man talking was very good at his knowledge. He warmed up his computer and was excited to watch the slide show but only talked no slides. It was cloudy that night so did really see much. My grandkids said was good information.
If you love astronomy and are around the KC area this is the place to go! Public nights on Saturdays the observatory is open!
This place is so underrated. It is run by unpaid volunteers who are very helpful in quelling your curiosity. So if you are even a little bit curious about the solar system this place is a no brainer
Lovely service by volunteers. Great people.
