Lourdes Tourism

Settled at the foothills of the southwestern part of the Hautes-Pyrenees Mountain, stands Lourdes. Being a global center of Marian pilgrimage since 1858, the town has been attracting thousands of visitors all over the year. The belief – appearance of the Virgin Mary at The Grotto of Massabielle, had played an important role in making Lourdes a prominent place of pilgrimage for Catholics. Taking a look into the map of Lourdes will show the entire city is divided into two sections. One side has the Grotto and the churches and the other side of Lourdes is centered around the market place, called Les Halles de Lourdes.

Now, commonly known as the ‘Sanctuaires Notre Dame de Lourdes’, the town has somehow become more commercialized. However, people still come with a hope of dipping into the ‘miracle water’ that was once recognized by the church. There are stories of patients that took a bath in that water and got cured miraculously. In between the spiritual face of the city, the souvenir shops selling plastic crucifix and increasing number of hotels give the impression that the town has grown up from being just a spiritual destination. Hence, a tour of Lourdes will surely make your trip memorable.
