Do something exciting in the evening on your trip to the town of Lowell in Michigan. Visit the James C Veen Observatory in Lowell. Built in the 1960s and opened to public in 1970, James C Veen Observatory is a great place for adults and kids alike. Apart from the three main telescopes housed in the observatory, there is also a Dobsonian telescope and a Lunt telescope with which you can see solar occurrences. They host public nights on selected days of the year when you can see celestial bodies at close quarters with the telescopes. During special astronomical occurrences, they also hold public events that you can attend if you happen to be in the area.
James C. Veen Observatory Reviews & Ratings
Very friendly people who love to share and show their knowledge of astronomy. It's always a very romantic and scenic place to be during a clear summer night. The entrance fees are always dirt cheap and there is always a large group of astronomers with different kinds of telescopes to show what the skies hold for the night.
I great local hidden destination that can provide an amazing glimpse at the larger picture. Enjoyed by children and adults alike. Several telescopes provided for viewing some of the different celestial objects and the cost is minimal, going to support the GRAAA. Check their schedule and weather permitting, check it out!
We had a such a wonderful time. So appreciate the time given to my kids!
Very cheap and educational experience. Would be a great family activity on public days. Also, there are great people in the GRAAA who will answer all your questions.
Great area to look at the stars during public nights. The folks who run it are super knowledgeable. Last time I went, someone with a laser pointer showed a few of us the milky way and a few star clusters. The location is a bit of a drive, but well worth it.
