Vianden Castle - Review

Standing as a reminisce of the Gothic era of 15th century Europe, the building is one of the largest and most elegant structures of Luxembourg built with romanesque finesse and quintessential style that was prominent during that period. Once the residence of the numerous counts, the beautiful castle is surrounded by lush green forest and reflects the grandeur and grace of that period with it opulent decor and embellishments. Travelers who don’t mind climbing the distance to the top will find themselves entranced by the lovely view of the city from up there. There are number of food joints around the place for people to sit and enjoy a leisurely meal overviewing the scene.

Vianden Castle, Luxemburg City Reviews

  • Short review: a nice place of the past to visit. Has attractions for a wide age range and you should visit it. A true relic of the past. In Luxembourg you can find the old town of Vianden. With many houses that are most likely dozens if not hundred of years old and brick roads, one place stands out the most: the castle of Vianden. The castle, which stands upon a roman camp ruins, is hundred of years old and took several centuries to fully build. In it, you can go on a self guided tour using. You can rent a multi-language speaker that explains about what is that you see in each station of the tour. It is recommended, and you can take 1 per family. You'll get to see the old ruins upon which the castle is built, through the life standard of the elite of the middle ages, through the work place of the common people serving as cooks and maids. You can also learn about the history of the family that resided in the castle and its connection to the royal family of the Netherlands. In the castle itself there are extra attractions for the visitors that are not included in the entry price. For example: holding an eagle, watching trained owls and eagles (though it seems they live fine, do not worry about animal abuse much), taking a shot at a bow and arrow, and more. At the end of the tour lies a market. If you look for middle age themed items, O don't recommend getting it there. Also there's kiosk and a simple restaurant. I haven't tried both, they are quite pricy. There are also attractions that are free, like nice acts (with so speaking, just acting, so anyone can understand) and some live music and flag show. Keep in mind: 1. You are in nature, take some relief cream in case you get stung by something (as I did) 2. Parking is limited by 5 hours, which is more than enough. 3. There are steps, some are narrow. Watch your step. All in all, there's not a lot of walking. 4. If you're looking to drive someplace else after, that is far, you should try to find a meal in Vianden. The surrounding areas are small rural villages with no restaurants. Vianden is also very small and narrow, so finding parking can be tough. Have fun!

  • View from below is amazing. Visited the inside. Tbh, it’s quite commercialized with many shops inside which personally for me, I didn’t quite enjoy as I can’t view the place as it is since most pop ups shops have covered the space. Even though they have shops in it, you’ll still be charged for entrance fee. And during summer, you’ll have to pay even if you have the Luxembourg tourist card. If you would like to take a shot of the castle, best view is from below. You wouldn’t be able to get a nice shot from the above. Long journey from the Luxembourg city. If you have half a day with nothing planned, there’s no harm in dropping by for a visit.

  • The wow starts already by seeing the castle from a distance, almost like it's balancing on a rocky Hill. Inside you can walk freely and discover the castle on your own. Interesting look into the foundations and many more or less decorated rooms with beautiful views impress you as visitor. Reasonable access price, parking can be a bit challenging on busy days. Not for people with disabilities.

  • A very neat castle. The ~2 hours visit is interesting and well done. There are lockers for your bags, a modern visitor centre and a discreet gift shop. Get there at 10 and it will not be too crowded.

  • This place is continually developing and preserving. I visit the castle for 30+ years and it was worth every visit. The medieval festival in the beginning of August makes the place even more authentic. Beware! Wheelchairs and people in bad health are well advised not to go here. The place is very high up on a hill and difficult to reach. Inside are no wheelchair arrangements. Great to visit with children but you will have to watch them closely as there are many unsafe area’s. One of the best castles I know to visit. Well worth the entrance fee.
