It beats my imagination a somewhat when I hear that this stunning building is sometimes affectionately called the upside down elephant by the locals – especially considering that the whole thing is a monument of gratitude to the Virgin Mary. Allegedly, the Virgin saved the city twice: first from a cholera epidemic in 1823 and then from Prussian forces in 1870.
It’s easily Lyon’s most prominent landmark from its position on top of Fourviere Hill. Unusual for the time (latter 19th century), the architecture is Byzantine and Romanesque and highly ornate at that – at least the upper church is, all done up with intricate details in golden gilt, marble, stained glass windows and mosaics – it’s otherworldly. Also definitely check out the blindingly ostentatious Golden Virgin statue. The lower church is relatively simple.
Make sure to visit the terrace. On a clear day the view of Lyon from here is simply spectacular and you can just about make out the Alps far, far away. Want an even better view? Pay the fee and climb up to the observatory – about 287 steps in all.

Basilique Notre Dame De Fourviere, Lyon Reviews
Glorious basilica with architecture features that are worth visiting. The interior design of this immense church is probably more impressive than the exterior design. Definitely worth a visit up the hill to see for it yourself and to look down on the city from a great vantage point. For those thinking of climbing up the hill, better be prepared for a good hike with decent shoes.
Pretty skyline of Lyon. The basilica itself is also beautiful, though you can not compare it with the ones at Milan or Paris. The small walkway from the basilica to the old town s lovely. It’s with trees around and it’s a comfortable walk.
We had no idea what we were in for when we started hiking up! But it was definitely worth it. This basilica is much newer than the older gothic-era cathedrals that blanket Europe from the Middle Ages. But it is modeled after those places, so the effect is to transport you back in time to the glory days of those older places. The decor is colorful and detailed. There are two magnificent halls on two levels. The exterior is clean and bright. And the view of the city is absolutely stunning. Highly recommended!
Having been to lots of beautiful churches across Europe I thought that this one was beautiful and more colorful than others, even in the same country. Beautiful stained glass windows and a lower level church had different religious moments representing many different countries. Beautiful views when you walk up. Metro station for Funicular is right there but if you want you can attempt to walk down the hill through the beautiful rose and orchard gardens. It’s very steep, paved, and there’s stairs that cut through the winding roads. Once out of the garden you can still walk down another very steep set of steps. When entering the garden you can choose to go left to the orchards and right to the roses. We did left and saw beautiful hydrangeas. Nicely covered and cool. No dogs, food, or wine.
This place is awesome to visit. The best way to get the most out of this place is to take the guided rooftop tour. The guides are very knowledgeable and the views are spectacular. You get to see some cool areas inside the church and from up top. Definitely check this out when in Lyon.
