It beats my imagination a somewhat when I hear that this stunning building is sometimes affectionately called the upside down elephant by the locals – especially considering that the whole thing is a monument of gratitude to the Virgin Mary. Allegedly, the Virgin saved the city twice: first from a cholera epidemic in 1823 and then from Prussian forces in 1870.
It’s easily Lyon’s most prominent landmark from its position on top of Fourviere Hill. Unusual for the time (latter 19th century), the architecture is Byzantine and Romanesque and highly ornate at that – at least the upper church is, all done up with intricate details in golden gilt, marble, stained glass windows and mosaics – it’s otherworldly. Also definitely check out the blindingly ostentatious Golden Virgin statue. The lower church is relatively simple.
Make sure to visit the terrace. On a clear day the view of Lyon from here is simply spectacular and you can just about make out the Alps far, far away. Want an even better view? Pay the fee and climb up to the observatory – about 287 steps in all.

Basilique Notre Dame De Fourviere Reviews & Ratings
Beautiful church with a lovely park nearby. Hill has a beautiful view on the city. The interior is beautifully decorated and you definitely feel a great energy, being there. Notable thing is that it is a working, functioning church and doesn’t feel like a tourist attraction in a good way. It was really a great pleasure to visit it and left a strong impression in memory.
Absolutely beautiful. The details and richness in culture this place shows is unparalleled. Don't forget to walk down to the crypt where an impressive collection of international treasures are on display. And also, as you leave, make sure to take in the panoramic view of the city from high above
Beautiful church with incredible architecture and art. Truly breathtaking. We did not need to pay entry on a Saturday but take care to be quiet and no photos inside. We opted to walk up through the gardens which was well worth the steepness. Incredible views over Lyon city once at the top.
Stunningly beautiful interior. The photos cannot do justice to the craftsmanship, especially the mosaics. Outside are a couple of souvenir shops which, sadly, do not sell pictures or good postcards of the artwork. Good cafeteria next door for cheap fresh food.
What a beautiful church! We climbed through the steep steps and it was worth it! The views are amazing, and the architecture was stunning. It was full moon the night we visited, and there was a church service going, so it was a perfect timing. We were lucky to be there that beautiful evening.
