Do you have a fetish for different kinds of cloth or ridiculously gold looking and classical interior decor? Come here and salivate at one of the richest textile collections in the world – covering about 4000 years worth of cloth history. The museum functions as two different museums though both are covered with the same ticket.
The textile museum’s collection began accumulation in 1846 and from then it just grew and grew through gifts, acquisitions and bequests. The main collections revolve around Egyptian and Coptic textiles, Middle Eastern (Persian, Byzantine, Muslim and Ottoman), Far Eastern (Japanese and Chinese) and Western (European, Spanish, Italian, British, German, French). These include carpentry, silk, embroideries, costumes, tapestries, upholsteries and lace. Pretty comprehensive isn’t it?
The Decorative Arts Museum on the other hand complements the textile section with an emphasis on Parisian cabinets, Italian majolica, French furniture, European paintings, ornate and fanciful Renaissance clocks commissioned by the Kings, and French silverware.
Even of you’re not an aficionado of these things… you can happiy spend an hour here – it’s all so colourful.

Amazing museum! An absolute must when visiting Lyon. The museum is much bigger than expected with lots of historical French culture. The textile exhibits include some international pieces as well. Every piece in the museum is intricate and beautiful. Well worth the €10 admission (bring a student card for the €7.50 discounted rate).
Lovely small museum - well laid and labelled - highlighting Lyon’s role in the silk industry, with some splendid costumes and tapestry, and a remarkable punch card Jacquard loom.
It is a very interesting place, worth to vist. Realy nice argumnts of the famous lyonaise tissue fabrics. One tickets for all day - 10 Euros. Kid under 12 is free with an adult.
If you like fiber arts, this is an impressive and unique Museum. Make sure you are at the doors on the far, far left, which is the entrance. The door on the right can fool you as they are locked up tight.
We love looking at how people, at least wealthy people, lived long ago. Beautiful objet d'art in room settings. There's a preservation reason for dim lighting, but it makes it hard to see some objects. All labeling is in French; nothing is in English.
