Churches have a habit of claiming historically religious spots. This location originally held a temple of Attis; when it was torn down, a basilica was erected here in commemoration of the Christian martyrs of Lyon of 177 A.D. Outsiders didn’t like the church very much – it was razed by the Saracens, Charles Martel and even parishioner named Peter Waldo. The current building started construction in 1303 and went on for a hundred years through. Boldly Gothic for the most part, the church nevertheless has a classically Renaissance portal. Damages, repairs and additions waged a war of attrition on the church over the centuries but it persevered. In the 1970’s the benevolent reputation of the church made it a staging ground for anti-police-brutality by the prostitutes of Lyon.
