Earlier known as The Academy of Music, The Grand Opera House was constructed in the year 1884 to serve as a centre for performing arts in Macon. The opera house has served a variety of purposes in the past like providing a venue for band performances, hosting the famed magician and escape artist Harry Houdini and also as a movie theater. Though, only a single Hollywood movie had its premier at the venue, still its historic importance is such that the building was finally added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
