1. Take a Look at the Historic Hay House

The late 1850s is the time when this great Italian Renaissance Revival Style House was built. The area of the house is quite big around 18,000 square feet. The decoration of the house is phenomenal. There are some old historic items present in the house. There are a total of seven floors in the building but only the first floor, the second floor, and the basement are open all the time. Though there are a few occasions when each year all the floors of the building are open to public. There are several attic spaces, a secret room, and the wine cellar.

2. Check the Memories of the Allman Brothers Band Museum

The museum is there to keep alive the memories of the Allman Brothers Band. In older times, the name of the house was The Big House. From the year 1970 to 1973, the house was the home of the members of Allman Brothers Band. There are some great archives in the museum like the handwritten lyrics, the instruments, and the artwork of the Allman Brothers Band. You can find a gift shop in the museum too where Allman Brothers Band Merchandise, apparel, CDs, and many other gifts related to the Allman Brothers Band are still available.

3. Witness the beauty of Ocmulgee National Monument 

The history of more than 10,000 years of the Native American culture is written all over this place. There is an archeology museum and a visitor center in the park. Otherwise known as the Academy of Music, it has one of the largest stages in the country. The name, the Grand Opera house was given to the theatre in the year 1905. Some of the biggest celebrities of all time performed on the stage of the Grand Opera House like Charlie Chaplin, Will Rogers, John Philip Sousa Band, Lionel and Ethel Barrymore, George Burns, Ray Charles, Bob Hope, and last but not the least the Allman Brother Band, which is also a local band of Macon.

6. Feel the Calmness of the Rose Hill Cemetery

The Rose Hill Cemetery is located on the northern sides of Macon beside the Ocmulgee River. Simri Rose was behind the idea of building this cemetery in the year 1840. People use to gather here to spend some time every afternoon. The famous local Band the Allman Brothers Band’s favorite hanging place was this cemetery. The bass player Berry Oakley and the guitarist Duane Allman are buried here along with some of the greatest politicians of the town. The Rose Hill Ramble is also hosted here twice every year.

This 8,500 square feet museum is known for preserving some of the greatest and oldest artifacts from the African American History. This Greek Revival Style house was built in the year 1853. During the Civil war, the house was severely damaged by a cannonball. That is the reason, the name of the house in Cannonball house. There are some old furniture, which is there since the 1850s. The house is also used as the meeting rooms of the first sororities, the Adelphean society and the Philomathean society. Outside of the house, you will find bronze cannon made in the year 1864. You can visit the brick kitchen, gardens, and the servant’s quarter of the house. There is also a gift shop there, which sells things like local food items, souvenirs, jewelry, and books.

One of the largest Parks in the city of Macon is the Tattnall Square Park. The cottage is now a museum, where you will be able to know the life history of one of the renowned musician and singer Sidney Lanier. There are guided tours to help you out. There is a gift shop in the cottage too. The name of the shop is Sideporch Store. Here you will find historic maps, local items, art, architectural books, souvenirs, and apparel. For big occasions like corporate parties, bridal teas, weddings, etc. the cottage is given on rent.

13. Find History in the Walls of Fort Hawkins

In the earlier parts of 1800, this fort was built. The US government was the first user of the fort. The fort is not in a good condition today and there are several plans to reconstruct is as soon as possible.
