This is one of the ancient gates of the city of Naples, from a time when it was till known as Neapolis. It’s thought that this may not be the gate’s original location The Spanish viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo may have moved the gate 100 metres south from a spot outside the church of Gesudelle Monache (on the same alley) during his efforts to enlarge the city’s boundaries. There is a small frescoed chapel in the gate. Also see the stone bust of San Gaetano.
