A popular place for several city events and activities, the Madison Public Library is one of the most renowned properties in the city. Often evaluated for having as many events as it does, that dilute its being as a library, the attraction still features a good number of books. It was previously referred to as the Madison Free Library and is a part of the South-Central Library System. Additionally, the library is credited to be the “second-largest public library system in Wisconsin after Milwaukee Public Library”. Given the fact this is library is actually a system, you have access to several other neighborhood libraries too.

  • We're new to the area and have been exploring many of the public libraries. We have stopped in here once before but I cannot wait to come back after reading another review mentioning Drag Queen Story hour! We are raising our daughter to be kind, accepting, and empathetic and love letting her see the beauty in others. I hope to see this event on the calendar again so we can try to make it! Thank you Madison Public Libraries for such wonderful, inclusive programming.

  • We will never come to any public library anymore after what we witnessed today. They had a DRAG QUEEN reading stories to innocent children. My daughter was horribly frightened when she saw this drama, not drag "QUEEN." Why are you putting such horrible images into kid's minds and adults. Reading can be imaginative but this is beyond fantasy. God created male and female. He didn't create men acting as females or vice versa. He didn't create gender neutral. I thought it was halloween today. Dressing up is fine but portraying yourself to children who don't know the truth is detrimental. Obviously these "men" are not happy with themselves if they have to portray a character they are not. Bad choice Madison.

  • Outstanding people and services. Ten desktop computers and loaner laptops available. > 100 paper magazines. Good graphic novel collection. Knowledgeable and friendly librarians. Small meeting rooms are excellent for tutoring and groups up to five; large meeting room can hold 100. Accessible restrooms are large enough for a side-by-side transfer.

  • This tiny, cozy library is one of my favorite places to go on the west side of Madison! The librarians are always friendly and willing to help, and the books are well-organized and well-kept. EVP Coffee and the Chocolate Shop Ice Cream are conveniently located near by, and it is awesome that you can get a book from a library, and then sit outside on a nice day with some iced coffee or ice cream. In my opinion, it's probably one of the best libraries in Madison.

  • The staffs here are very nice. Environment is welcome and clean. I always use holding service and the books on hold are easy to get. My daughter loves to check out children’s collection here. The best part of this library is the self-checkout machines. They are the modest ones in the public library system as they can read all the books we want to checkout at once (mostly my daughter does 15-17 books at a time)
