This is Madrid’s largest cemetery, and certainly the most popular cemetery of the last century. There are over five million graves here, which essentially makes Madrid’s dead population greater than its living population. 125 years old, some of Spins’ most notable figures are buried here. Most of its initial internments were victims of the cholera epidemic that reach Madrid the same year that the city was built in 1884. The place gets especially crowded on All Saints Day. Walking through it, you’ll find that the architectural styles of the monuments are greatly varied, but almost universally magnificent.
