About Estatua Del Angel Caido, Madrid

Built originally in 1877 Ricardo Bellver, the beautiful plaster statue won the first prize at the Exposiciones Nacionales de Bellas Artes and was presented to the Exposition Universelle in a Bronze form (since only Bronze and Marble statues were accepted here). The original was destroyed and the Bonze statue still remains to be one of the most iconic interpretations of Lucifer.

Today, the small monument consists of ‘the fallen angel’ in despair as he is banished from paradise. Many controversies have surrounded this monument including Satanic practices carried on its shadow and the monument being placed at exactly 666 metres above the sea level- a rather interesting fact for the visitors!

  • This is a must visit if you are in Madrid. Retiro Park is very beautiful and this statue of the devil is unique. Este parque es una visita obligatoria si estás en Madrid. La única estatua del demonio está aquí:)

  • A pretty spot. Didn't realize this was a statue of the devil (fallen angel), just thought the fountains on the bottom were funny.
