About Iglesia De Las Calatravas, Madrid

Built in the 17th century, the Iglesia de Las Calatravas is the only remaining part of the former Convent of the Real Conception. The church’s history is linked to the Military Order of Calatrava founded in the 12th century, to defend the Christian possessions during Muslim attacks.

Today, the church is one of the most popular places in Madrid, loved for its classic Spanish Baroque architecture and design. The present exteriors were ordered by the consort of King Francis of Assisi who changed the exteriors of the place to form a more romantic style and design. The alter designed by Jose de Churriguera, is the crown jewel of the church and is a treat by itself.
