The Independence square or Plaza de la Independencia was opened in 1778 during the reign of King Carlos III and designed by architect Francesco Sabatini. The current design of the square dates back to 1869 during the expansion of Madrid city.

Today, the beautiful square is apt for a small walk as you touch another part of the city’s rich historic places. The surrounding eateries and shops make for a great place to try some local cuisine. The monument at the Plaza is loved for its architecture and is the highlight of the place.
