Like Camden in London and East Village in New York City, this neighbourhood breathes and oozes counterculture. If there’s anything the least bit non-mainstream, Malasana will have the boutique, book store, the bar, the café, or the nightclub to represent it: alternative, funk, LGBT, bohemian, hard rock and metal, house, nudists, BDSM, gothic, Latin, classic, 1980s, hip-hop and so on. The neighbourhood makes a killing on selling designer stuff. The actual name Masalana is in commemoration of a young 15 year old who was killed in the 1808 uprising here. So far the place is doing an excellent job of balancing commercialism and it’s alternative atmosphere. One phenomenon you can’t miss out on is the Botellons – a small gathering of people who have a round or two of preliminary drinks before heading off to the actual party.
