The square is a general representative of the somewhat exotic neighbourhood. Lavapies is an under-developed barrio of Madrid. It used to be the Jewish Quarter of the city in the medieval ages until the Jews were expelled in 1492. In the second half of the 20th century, a lot of immigrants such as Africans, Chinese and the Arabs made their home here thanks to the low rent and living costs. This quickly gave the reputation of being a vertical slum. You’ll find a high level of police presence here, which is not surprising, considering that the local drug market functions practically out in the open. The plaza is very popular with tourists for it’s bad boy, Bohemian feel.
Definitely check out the La Corrala, which is a partially preserved example of what a historical tenement block here looks like. The Teatro Valle-Inclán was added to the plaza to try and attract an upper-class crowd – it’s beautiful.
