The Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram include 40 sanctuaries and are segregated as Mandapas, Rock reliefs, Temples and Rathas. The place also has the largest open-air rock relief in the world to its credit! Many of these structure belong to the 7th century (the time period of the Pallava Dynasty). This particular dynasty incorporated grandeur in Tamil art and culture and left behind gorgeous historic monuments. The most famous Pallava structure here is the Shore Temple that has a minimal yet impeccable design with a shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

The Ratha cave Temple is an addition to these monuments and was built by the Pallava king Narsimha. The name “Ratha” comes from chariot and translates to a temple that is carved out to resemble the shape of a chariot. There are in all 8 rathas in Mahabalipuram- 5 of which are named after the Pandavas and 1 after their wife Draupadi. All the rathas are constructed like Buddhist structures.

Today only the Dharmaraja Ratha (the largest of the rathas with multiple storeys), Bhima Ratha, Arjuna Ratha, Draupadi Ratha (the smallest) and Nakul Sahadev Ratha survive. The Arjuna Raths is dedicated to Lord Shiva while the Draupadi Ratha is dedicated to Goddess Durga.

The entire complex is quiet a sight for history lovers with exquisite carvings, sturdy construction that has stood the test of time and interesting stories that spin magic into the place. It also gives you a peak into the Pallava Dynasty and its culture and belief.
