The appeal of this lake is quite straightforward - an easy looping hike on a gravel trail around a picturesque lake. It’s quite a short hike too, only about 1.6 miles, and it loops a full circle around the lake. The escarpment of Mammoth Crest looms above the lake. The lake has one additional attraction - this is the only lake in the Mammoth Lake area where swimming is permitted. There’s a sandy beach, perfect for picnics. The trees and tree stumps around the lake are famous for the ‘dead forest’ pictures you can take of them, especially when silhouetted against the sky during sunrise or sunset. They were killed by some geologic activity in 1990.
