This is a long but absolutely beautiful hike. From the trail head you have the option of two destinations, both following the creek canyon nearly all the way - Steelhead Lake or Big McGee Lake. Either way, you’ll be heading south on the west bank of the creek, crossing over a bridge for a short jaunt on the east bank, and then back to the west. You’ll go past sagebrush, junipers, many groves of creekside aspen, and beaver dammed-lake. You’ll have passed may mountains on the way. At this point you can turn around or head towards the lakes. The hike is most beautiful in the mid-October fall foliage. Plan for an elevation gain of 1210 feet. The one way trio is just under 7 miles.

  • Campground has exposed spaces, but most are fairly far apart from one another. Best ones are near aspen trees or along creek. Clean, flush bathrooms (I attribute that to a very good campground hose). Quiet at night.

  • Gorgeous views, very close to the main highway but still out of earshot or sight, completely rural but still close to Mammoth Lakes. Just on the other side of the campground is a place that offers guided horseback riding. I HIGHLY recommend doing it! Some of the best views I've ever seen.

  • Nice small and remote campground with excellent host and immaculate grounds.

  • Stayed at McGee for two night and wish we could stay longer. It was awesome my kids had a blast fishing and exporing. The staff went above and beyond . Great place to relax. We will be back for sure .

  • We stayed here for 4 days the first week of October. I can't say enough good things about this place! The hosts there were so personable and helpful in assisting me to choose the perfect site. We were camped right on the beautiful stream, and could hear the rush of the water clearly. The available restrooms were clean and well stocked. There is even a fish cleaning station outside! We will definitely be back!
