Rotonda di San Lorenzo is the most ancient church in the city of Mantova, built by the Canossa family in the late 11th century. Built out of bricks and marble, it is hard to believe that this wornout chapel has seen hundreds of generations. Gloomy remnants of the frescoes from the 12th and the 13th century still adorn the walls of this historic building. This two-storeyed structure was constructed as a tribute to the martyr St. Lawrence, and the second floor is preserved as a matronaeum, where only females are allowed. It is a widespread belief that this building was built on the site of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Venus.
