Marathon Tourism

Smack in the middle of a long, narrow island in the Florida Keys, with a sparse population of only about 10000, Marathon is a very, very pleasant vacation travel destination. The vacation list of things to do here is topped by the water sports–snorkelling, fishing, boating. Second, it’s the wildlife–turtles and dolphins and all the other fauna in the State Parks. Third is the wonderful sightseeing, whether while you’re cable water-skiing, or you’re cruising over the pretty seven Mile Beach.

The city itself was only incorporated as recently as 1999. It got it’s name from the workers of the Florida East Coast Railroad, who, working night and day trying to complete the project, said that it was getting to be a real ‘Marathon’. The place is also famous as the former home of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore.

  • Be careful: Once you pass Knights Key Blvd, you begin crossing the Seven Mile Bridge, and if you did not want to get onto it, then you’ve no choice but to take a 14 mile detour.
