Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions – that’s what you’re here to see. And boy can you get up close and personal with these fellas. Every 30 minutes, there’s a presentation on dolphin behaviour. The staffs are always talkative about their charges, so ask them anything. The dolphins themselves are always eager to people watch, and watching their group dynamics are fascinating. There’s a cute little mini-water park you and your kids can indulge in if you’re so inclined, called the Spray ground.

The Dolphinarium has a keen interest in making the trip especially fun for war veterans – that’s why they have the Veteran Gardens, a tranquil section created by the veterans of the Vietnam War.

For a steep additional price of $200, you can go for private encounters, which is a lot more personal experience of interaction. Book that way in advance though.

Dolphin Research Center Reviews & Ratings

  • (July 2018) Would give 1,000 stars if possible. So impressed with the natural beauty and humbleness of this facility. A home for dolphins that can't be in the wild- not an exploitation of animals for money. The employees were friendly and truly passionate about all the animals. We brought our son who has a mild form of autism, and they did whatever they could to make sure he was comfortable. A true "bucket-list" experience.

  • Wow, Wow, and more Wow. We are Keys locals and final had some guests in town with young children who wanted to go “swim with the dolphins”. Genuinely wish we had gone sooner and taken our kids, who are now basically adults and not as interested. This is an absolutely authentic research center. They care much more about the Dolphins than making a couple of extra bucks. I gained a ton of respect for the work they’re doing here and how they treat the animals. planning to take as many of our visiting guests there as possible to educate them.

  • An incredibly special place where all the staff is extremely dedicated and passionate about the care and conservation of all the animals here. We were pleasantly surprised that it was not just dolphins and sea lions, but exotic birds and even a very special white rooster. This place is a must go even if you do not intend to swim with dolphins.

  • Amazing Experience! This is definitely a bucket list item. Our family of 5 took to the waters and had a great time playing with dolphins. The program is designed to get interaction with everyone in the group, but on the Dolphins timeline. The Dolphins love to entertain and it shows. The trainers also love their jobs and it shows to. My youngest was nervous about the Dorsal Fin ride, so the trainer hopped in the water and went with her! Talk about ultimate experience, thanks Mallory! Highly recommend this activity.

  • I truly did enjoy this place. It's much more "homegrown" than a lot of these sorts of dolphin-swim places, and it really does seem to be open for the dolphins not for the people. (Note here: be open and available for what these gorgeous creatures wish to provide us--remember, we are visiting their space and time...not the other way around) so relax and enjoy and go with the flow and you'll be delighted!! We had a great chat with a young 'researcher' (Kat?) who had just joined the team a few months ago--she was really living the dream, after studying biology in college... And desiring a new start! Knowledgeable and passionate. Folks from the trainers thru the counter attendants were very dedicated and interested in the success of this place. My son and daughter both loved the spray park after being in the sun with the dolphins! My 10yr old loved the Dolphin encounter, esp the swim and the dorsal pull--but most of all I think it made an impression on her to get to know the dolphins names and personalities! Note: they do have a "snack truck", and very kindly gave my toddler a frozen pop for free. Also, folks said the breakfast burrito was great!! Would LOVE to be able to send my 10yr old to day camp here, for sure!! (#mom goals) PS. Don't get there too early they open on the dot for swimmers and for the public at 9am!
