In 1857, Alfred and Ellen Bussell settled here to set up a beef and dairy farm. They were among the first to settle among the Wardandi people. Today, you’ll find a ramshackle house here made of the most common everyday material junk. In the early years of the 20th century, Edith Bussel formed an Aboriginal mission here, where she taught the local kids to read and write.

There’s not much to see at the house itself, but the surrounding countryside is quite charming. There are sand dunes nearby, and a quaint little stream. A 40 minute walk from the Homestead will take you the mystic Meekadarabee Cave and Meekadarabee Falls, a stunning little grotto, where, according to aboriginal legend, the moon used to come to bathe.

One of the more popular spots here is the Ellensbrook Surf Break.

• You’ll have to drive to here. It’s 13 kilometres northwest of the city.
