'The Wave' was installed in January 2016 to honour the 51 lives lost on the disastrous night of January 13th, 1916, when the village was hit by a terrifying flood. Created by renowned artist Linda Verkaaik, this masterpiece is symbolic to the loss, as well as, victory over water. Shaped like a boat, The Wave represents Noah's Ark which survived the great flood the same way Marken survived the flood 100 years back. There are plastic cartridges are in the form of handkerchiefs that represent the emergence from mourning period and finding new strength. It is indeed a beautiful installation to remember the dead.
