It’s not the only prison of its kind in the world (Cannes has it’s Lerin Islands), but it’s the only one that Edmond Dantes of Alexandre Dumas’ Count of Monte Cristo was imprisoned in. The island is a heavily fortified prison with steep cliffs adorned by gun platform – an escape proof prison that no invading navy ever took. You know what? Looks are deceptive – its defences are very poorly planned, and a well thought out attack might very well have taken it out. Poor people were placed in the bottom cells and the wealthier prisoners had private cells higher up. It’s not made very tourist friendly. So look around and let your imagination place you in a cell instead. We know that’s what you really wanted to do!
The shuttle boat that takes you here also visits the other Frioul Islands: Ratonneau, Tiboulen and Pomegues. You can make a combined trip; it’s well worth it if you’re interested in extreme environments. The dry Mistral Wind caused some unique bird, animal and plant life to evolve here.

The boat is easy to step off onto the harbour but there are about 100 steps up from there to the castle and cafe. The cafe has outdoor seating and nice views. The castle is good to look around and can climb stairs right up to the roof top of the main turret. All information panels are in French only. Worth a stop on your way to the isl de frioul.
I love this place! Went here with my brother and his gf by ourselves last summer on our Europe cruise trip. This Marseille sightseeing trip was not offered on our cruise but it's very easy to go here by yourself! You can get here by taking a boat ride from the Old Port (Le Vieux Port). Just checked the schedule on when they usually depart. It was a very good trip because there were not a lot of tourists. I think there were only 5-7 people when we got there and they were also about to leave the island so the place was really deserted. It felt like we got the whole island for ourselves! Haha! It was an awesome experience to see in person the setting of Alexandre Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo"! We were able to get a lot of good photos of the place! The view from the top was really beautiful! There is a souvenir shop by the entrance of this place. There is also a small coffee shop on the island. This island was one of my favorite places on our trip! ❤️
Interesting and well made. Definitely worth doing the tour if you have time in Marseille to spend. Only criticism, they charge per person 16€ for the boat trip and another 6 to actually let you on the island. Apart from that good.
Just outside of Marseille 20 min away on a boat aptly called ‘Edmond Dantes’. D’If is a small beautiful island with the legendary fortress & prison made famous by Alexandre Dumas’ Count of Monte Cristo
A historical place where you can enjoy at least a couple of hours of good views, great scenes for photographs and interesting information. This is the place that inspired Alexander Dumas to write The Count of Monte Cristo.
