    Marseille Opera

    Theatre, Opera House

Marseille’s history of opera goes back to the 17th century. This building was only constructed in 1924, though. It has seating for 1800 audience members at a time. The interior design is pretty standard for opera houses - bowl shaped audience area, boxes, balconies and a gallery - but is is lavishly decorated. The audience is known to be kind of snobby and hard to please, but if they are ...Read more

    Jardin De La Magalone

    Garden, Park

This is a simple but utterly picturesque classical garden in front of a historic 17th century country house. The grass is soft and green, the trees spread their shades widely, the house is an utterly charming backdrop, and there is an interesting looking fountain statue. When the tulips bloom you begin to wish a garden like this for yourself. Two statues here represent the canals Rhône an...Read more
  5. Marseille Ferris Wheel

    Rides

The previous wheel here used to be 43 meters high. It’s been replaced by one 55 meters high. That makes this Ferris the second largest in the country. The panorama is heartbreakingly beautiful at sunset. But a common c...Read more

  7. Rue Saint Ferreol

    Streets

This is where everyone comes to shop in Downtown Marseille. There is no other street quite as crowded. Part of the reason is that this is a totally car free pedestrian street. Most of the stores are fashion and apparel outlets but there are a handful of banks too. The buildings all look regal. Be Warned: it’s a bit of a tourist trap. Rue Paradis is usually a better experience.
  8. Memorial De La Marseillaise

    History Museum

This song was written by royalist Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle after France declared war on Austria on 20 April 1792. Paradoxical, yes. The composer was almost executed for his allegiance. Three years later his song became the national anthem of France. This 17th century house is not far from the meeting place that made this song famous. It is filled with memorabilia related to the song, like ...Read more
