Hookipa Beach Park is considered to be one of the top most spots for recreational activities ranging from water sports to ocean related activities in the whole of Maui. It is located exactly at Mile number 9 on Hana Highway which is highway no 36.Apart from being a beautiful white sand beach, it also has some of the best waves on the whole coastline of Maui. Considered as one of the pioneers in terms of explored sites for surfers, this place is known to host large and small events with equal enthusiasm. Red bull and Aloha Surfing competitions have been hosted here ever since they began, if you are into exploring the waters the way surfers do- then the drive to Hana Highway would simply become more rewarding for you.

  • A "shelf" of sorts here separates the ocean from the beach, creating little pools on the beach side of the shelf. That makes this beach great for everyone: those seeking adventure can surf or wind surf, those looking for a nice sandy beach will enjoy the abundance of it, the little kids can play in the protected pools (with supervision: the occasional big wave will reach over the shelf into the pool), and anyone can go watch the turtles resting on the southeast end of the beach (17 of them last time I visited!). There's also pavilions with seating and charcoal barbeques up by the parking lot. It is windy here (obviously: this is a prime spot for wind surfing) so just be sure to weigh down all your belongings. To clear up confusion on the hours: the park is open 5:30am-7:00pm, but the bathrooms are only unlocked 7:00am-7:00pm.

  • Great beach to watch sea turtles and local surfers. Arrived around 5:15pm and saw at least 20 sea turtles lounging on the beach. Even saw a few coming out of the ocean and making their way up the beach.

  • Turtles, turtles, and more turtles! Visited this beach one evening around 4pm after others told us of the daily sightings. Thirteen turtles were resting on the beach. Visitors need to stay 15 feet back and usually the turtles are roped off by lifeguards. Young surfers were out but it is not a great swimming beach. Lots of rocks and strong surf. Parking fills up quick by the beach but at the top of the rocks there is another lot.

  • Where you go to see turtles up close and beaching out. Bit more advanced snorkeling, but great for that. Lots of locals surf out here too.

  • You can view sea turtles on the east side of the beach, which is nice. It's a great beach for windsurfing and surfing and boogie boarding, but not as much for just hanging out at the beach.
