Occupying a vast area of 1,130 square kilometers, Lake Toba is the largest natural lake in Indonesia. Formed due to a major volcanic eruption almost 70,000 years ago, Lake Toba is also the largest volcanic lake in the world. The lake with crystal clear water, the surrounding mountains, and the tropical rainforest together make for a postcard perfect picture. The place is very serene and makes you feel calm and relaxed in no time. Since swimming may be prohibited, you can take a look at this lake from a far distance. Since the lake water isn’t much nutrient-rich, it does not support abundant flora and fauna. Visiting this lake will help you unwind and de-stress after a hectic week.

Besides that, you can also enjoy the local culture. cool air and the vastness of the beautiful lakes and mountains complete the beauty of this volcanic lake. highly recommendedđź‘Ť.

  • Huge lake, calm, clear water. Hills in and around, breathtaking view from the top. A few waterfalls. Since I went there at the beginning of rainy season I was fortunate to see the waterfall which falls on the road, they say it's dry in other season. There is even a sand beach on the Samosir island.

  • I haven’t really been to Samosir since I was a little girl, and because of my age, of where I’m at in my life, having the chance to spend time in my parents hometown means more to me than ever. What a beautiful trip down memory lane! gorgeous lake.

  • Definitely should be on your itinerary if you are visiting Sumatra.
