The Laguna de Guatape is a monolithic formation that used to be worshipped by the Tahamies Indians who settled around this area. Even though quiet a unqiue sight on its own, the rock shot to popularity when Luis Villegas, Pedro Nel Ramirez, and Ramón Díaz climbed the rock in 5 days in the 1950’s. A new plant species was also found on top of the formation that was named named ‘Pitcairnia heterophylla’.
Today, the rock, standing at a height of 200 meters with concrete steps that zigzag its length, is a treat for tourists and an absolute must-see if you are looking for a little adventure.
