The Peabody hotel is one of the most important and oldest hotels in the city. The beautiful fountain on the rooftop is the main attraction here. As you go up you will find 5 ducks roaming on the rooftop there. This has an interesting story behind it.

Long back in the 1930’s, the manager of the Peabody named Frank Schutt and a friend named Chip Barwick came back from hunting in the Arkansas. They were quite a bit tipsy from an over does of whiskey and decided to place some live duck decoys in the fountain just for fun. This became an enthusiastic activity and is now a legacy.

It is known that before the ducks were used turtles and baby alligators. Seeing this, ring master Bellman Edward Pembroke took the charge of supplying ducks and training them. Now what we see is the ducks marching every day. This has since been a very popular tourist attraction.

  • It was a weekly stay of mine at ‘The Peabody Hotel’ due to a business visit to Memphis last week. It was quite an amazing and comfortable experience I had during my stay. The staff is very helpful and cooperative, room was excellent and the location was perfect and quite near to Beale street - the most happening place in Memphis. Ducks are fun! This place is fantastic. I can’t wait to come back!!!

  • We didn't actually stay in the hotel, but we did go in the lobby. It was my first time here and the lounge/lobby area is breathtaking. The architecture is beautiful and a tantamount to a different era in history-the Roaring '20's. It's easy to imagine the social status the Hotel was in Memphis in 1928. Furthermore, the staff in the lounge and the shops were very friendly and helpful. Everyone was nice and the atmosphere of the whole place simply exuded elegance.

  • Do you have to visit the Peabody if you are coming to Memphis, even if you don't stay here. Seeing the duck show in the morning is a staple and totally worth it. One secret is that you can go all the way up to the rooftop without any problems and get great views of the city. You can also see where the ducks stay during the night time. Just be respectful, of course. Other than that the shopping on the ground floor features high-end, classy items for men and women and the style of this hotel will have you taking many pictures throughout!

  • We came to see the ducks and were just amazed and the number of people there for the same reason. The duck Wrangler was wonderful!!! What a great speaker!! Definitely worth the trip. :)

  • We sadly had to cancel our stay...during the call I discovered our reservation was made for the day before and we had been charged as a no show. The gal not only reversed the charge and the fee, but she did it happily. We will definitely stay in the future. I love them already! ♥️🇺🇸♥️
