Basilica Of Our Lady Of Guadalupe - A Roman Catholic Church, Basilica in Mexico City, Mexico. The legend goes that in a vision, the Virgin Mary bade peasant Juan Diego to have a church built in her name. When asked for proof of sign, he was told to carry ten roses in his cloak by the Lady, which upon being removed revealed an image of Mary herself. That very cloak is still on display in the Basilica, and for that reason, it’s the second most visited basilica in the world, after the one in the Vatican. Its 12 million annual visitors have many opportunities to attend mass here, which is held upto 30 times in a single day. It’s a huge building, capable of hosting upto 50000 devotees at once. It’s divided into the Old Basilica, where perpetual adoration is held and the New Basilica, the circular structure of which allows the image of the Virgin to be seen from any spot inside the building. Moving walkways take visitors under the image. Still, the main attraction here is the sheer devotion of the believers.
