The Intracoastal Waterway or the ICW runs 4800 kilometres along the United States Coasts of Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic and ensures easy navigation between the cities located on its banks. This inland waterway runs from Massachusetts and Boston to the Atlantic Seaboard to the southward direction and after covering the southern fringe of Florida, runs along the Gulf Coast to Texas. Various saltwater rivers, bays, natural inlets as well as artificial canals are fed by the Intracoastal Waterway. It is divided into three segments namely Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, and two sections of Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. It is a popular trading route of food-stuffs, construction materials and petroleum products. Recreational boaters, especially the “snowbirds” love this route to navigate south and north in winter and summer respectively.
