The first temple standing here was a Roman structure dedicated to the sun. when Marolus brought the relics of Saint Babylas of Antioch to this site min the 5th century, he built a church dedicated to Saint Romano. Later in the 11th century, the church of San Babila on the same site. Its medieval look has been tempered by a Baroque facelift in the 16th century. Finally, it received a neo-Romanesque facade in the 20th century. The church was one the third most important in the city. See the venerated image of the Madonna on the right aisle.
