It's possible this gate is just the current version of a ancient Roman gate that used to stand here as part of the city's walls. As the walls expanded, these gates lots their defence purpose. They were replaced with Spanish gates, which were in turn replaced with new gates under Napoleonic rule, functioning as tax houses. The current look was finalised in the early 19th century, a neo-classical structure with bas-reliefs and statues, doric porticoes, and niches with statues of classical Roman deities in them. It is made of Viggiù sandstone.
