There are actually two churches here, fused into a single structure.

The older church is a Romanesque building rebuilt in the 13th century, given an ornate brick Gothic portal and rose window in the 14th. It's built on the site of an ancient Roman church, which is suspected to have been built on an even older Roman temple. The newer structure was built in the 15th century, and is called the Ducal Chapel after Duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti. He had the church built in reaction to deaths of 20,000 locals to a plague. The interior wall in between the two has been demolished, creating two naves. There are remnants of some lovely frescoes inside by Bergognone.

There is also a 15th century bell tower.

San Cristoforo Sul Naviglio, Milan Reviews - Write a Review

  • A small. ancient church beautifully located on the north bank of Naviglio Grande. After visiting it, you may well enjoy going to one of the many bars, pubs and restaurants just across the canal.

Molto bella!
