This largest protected area was established in 1957. But, it has an interesting history of millions of years. Park protects the aboriginal rock carvings and paintings. These are also known as petroglyphs and pictographs. The valley was inhabited by Blackfoot tribe nine-thousand years back. Most of the carvings were created around that time. Another tribe, Shoshone, also created some of the paintings. These drawings help us in understanding the culture, lifestyle, and traditions of that time. Standing amidst the rock, surrounded by these carvings and imagining how it all was made thousands of years ago, is the once-in-a-lifetime experience. But, the time is taking a toll on this significant art. Erosion due to wind and water is naturally destroying the art. Taking a guided tour and sticking to marked trails will help in preserving this area.
