Once an abandoned iron mine, Millom ironworks local nature reserve has now become a bustling center of biodiversity. The iron industry, which provided employment to a number of people from Millom, was shut down in 1968. Since then, this place has provided the perfect setting for the growth and development of several species of flora and fauna. This place is home to around 20 bird species, 17 butterfly species and 10 bumblebee species. In addition to this, myriad species of flowers such as orchids decorate the area, thereby boosting the growth of insects and moths.
