This forest area was designated as a State Natural Area in 2008. The development of the park started since then. Hiking trails and cross-country skiing tracks are well-maintained. But, there are no camping sites or picnicking spots here. This limits the human interference and helps in keeping the area as natural as possible. This is a floodplain forest with huge, towering trees like swamp white oak, silver maple, river birch, aspen and green ash. These trees are the perfect nesting habitat for the red-shouldered hawk, which is declared as the endangered species. Other birds like the hairy woodpecker, common snipe, belted kingfisher, wood duck and brown creeper are common in the forest.
