This is a large private non- sectarian cemetery with a beautiful Byzantine style chapel. This chapel is listed in the Register of National Historic Places. It was inspired from the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. This is also one of the most beautiful cemeteries of the country modeled after rural French Cemeteries. It was a joint effort of two very famous men who were also workers for their city- Colonel William S. King and Thomas Lowry. Apart from all the beautiful sculptures inside this cemetery, the most attractive are the McMullen Monument by Nellie Walker and the Monument of the family of T.B. Walker.

Lakewood Cemetery Reviews & Ratings

  • Beautiful spacious grounds with many large old trees. There are tombstones that go as far back as the mid-1800s. The chapel is incredibly beautiful, a little known gem. The mosaics inside were created by the last generation of old school mosaic master craftspeople in Europe, and are on par with the stunning mosaics in the chapels of the old world. The inside of the chapel is a must-see for art lovers and artisans, as well as anyone who appreciates creations of tremendous beauty

  • I just moved back to Uptown Mpls, and needed someplace to walk a couple of miles without plowing thru the summer mobs around Bde Maka Ska. I have extended family buried here so I figured I could justify my presence if necessary. It turned out to be a wonderful place to walk for under an hour. Saw wild turkeys, a fishing osprey on the pond, and some stones/monuments that are true artworks. Highly recommended if you need some peace. Just avoid weekends, don't act invasive, and you should be fine. 👍

  • The Lantern Ceremony was a great experience.

  • The Lakewood Mausoleum is a spectacle. It's precision and attention to detail to go along with the beautiful colors, marble, and lighting makes it something special to observe. What a wonderful, calming place to pay your respects.

  • A really beautiful cemetery with a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind chapel. We tend to stop by a cemetery whenever we travel because they are usually quiet, pretty, and full of history. This one was our favorite. Nothing spooky about it—just beautiful hills, lakes, and monuments.
